An evening out to see West Side Story at the Lyric Theatre (Star Casino Sydney).
The last time I had seen the movie version of West Side Story (1961) was in music class in high school and I had some vague memories of the songs.
The sets made excellent use of the space, especially the steel beams and balconies for the beginning and sequences like the balcony scene and in-between scenes. I really enjoyed the songs and dances - the execution and the energy.
Admittedly the Romeo and Juliet story is not my favourite, it's overused and unbelievable because of the 'love at first sight' aspect. But I did enjoy the performance as a whole, even if not the actual musical.
It is interesting to see the performers after the performance going home in ordinary clothes, reminding me that for them, it's just 'another day in the office'.
