Fame - The Musical

28 October 2010

Well, it's definitely been a year for plenty of live shows.

We managed to get discounted tickets  in the stalls near the stage for Fame - The Musical at the Capitol Theatre.

I had no preconceptions coming into this show, so it was interesting to discover that it was an ensemble cast
with no particular lead, although some of the stories of the individual characters did stand out.

In particular, I loved the voice of the artiste who played Mabel Washington. On the other hand, although the role of Carmen was one of the main ones, I found the voice of the singer very abrasive and stark for the personality.

I always love musical sets, because of the ingenuity it takes for the set designers to make spaces work on the stage space they have. This production was no exception, as you got a really good sense of the era and the personalities of the characters filling that space.

The finale with the car was showy and fun, but left me with a sense of something lacking, although I'm not too sure what. I guess that happens from time to time.
