Brisbane: Wandering Around

We seem to be having a cool spell going on. I leave grey Sydney and end up in a very wet Brisbane, in the dry season.

No trouble with travelling here I suppose, except there was a brief concern we'd be stuck in a traffic jam driving in to the airport. It was on the International side though. And I got pulled over for a random test at security. Something to do with ions...?

Getting to the city was fine and the hostel I'm staying at was right there, but it was too early to check in, so I left my luggage and set off to hunt up some food, a map and something interesting to do. Ended up at Queen Street Mall, where there is a visitors information centre and a music festival going on. Over near Southbank was a group of people listening to a pretty good French dude while standing under their umbrellas. On the other side of the river, I found the markets but it was wet and people were starting to close. I stumbled across a Nepalese Pagoda left over from 1988, looking kind of at home in the rainforest bit. Took a walk through Queensland Museum (natural history/science), which was interesting; the bit about the endangered Australian species was sometimes a bit confronting. It's nice that entry is free.

Went back to check in and consider dinner, but ended up going back to the Cultural Centre to go to the State Library to find a wireless connection. The library was closed, but there were people with portable computers all outside the entrance (in the nooks and benches) all using the connection. Pretty weird, but I joined them as I had a few urgent things to do (I wouldn't have brought the laptop otherwise).

It was a long day, so I retired early.

The security check is to check for explosives mainly I believe, and illicit substances. It's like a hyped up sniffer dog that can detect the molecular fingerprint of compounds through ionisation of the sample tag inserted into the machine that they use to wipe you and your bag with.
