For various reasons, I had to do a 30 minute meditation on a piece of fruit, noting my various sensory experiences with it. Here is a truncated version of my 30 minutes with a Kiwi Fruit.
Sight
- dark green-grey base, kind of shiny when the light hits it
- flecks of brown
- furry carpet-like hairs
- one end with rosette (head)
- one end tufty (bottom)
- more hairs near bottom than head
- ovoid, almost rectangular
- plump
- around the head rosette, skin is pleated before becoming stretchy smooth in a circular way
- cut open, elliptoid creamy yellowish centre with thin fibrous lines running down the axis
- light green around it
- skin very thin
- little black seeds around the centre
Touch
- dry
- rough and ticklish on my fingertips and tongue (outside)
- crispy ends
- bumpy head
- thickly matted bottom
- tender when light pressure applied
- skin springs back
Smell
- skin only has faint smell - of what, I'm not sure
- when wet, earthy
- cut open, sharp and sweet and creamy
Sound
- body is whispery when rubbed
- head goes 'crsk', 'crsk', when rubbed
- bottom like flicking leaves of paper or crunching dry leaves
Taste
- skin is tasteless
- soft
- green flesh with seeds is tart and blandly sweet with a little crunch
- green flesh without seeds is mostly smooth with slight powdery/not-quite-gritty feel
- creamy yellowish centre is slightly chewier with subtle flavour
- when green flesh, seeds and creamy centre eaten together, the flavour is stronger than when eaten separately
- leaves a slight acrid feel on the tongue, especially on the palate
That was interesting. I have discovered many things about kiwi fruit that I have never noticed before. I actually wanted to try it with a peach, but it's not quite peach season yet.
