Various Items

#1 Kendo Training
I'm tired and really sore from the past two training sessions. Somehow I managed to injure my toe, which I didn't discover until I woke up this morning.

At the moment, I'm trying my best to participate in as many training sessions and improve as much as possible before I leave for the summer. I'm worried that I'll forget everything when I get back and have to work at it all over again. That would make the last few months not pointless precisely, but not as great an investment as I would have hoped.

#2 Socialising
Went out for dinner and socialising with people after Kendo training on Friday. Stayed out quite late.

On Saturday, I met up with people from ADG (Australian Discussion Groups) for an early dinner and then karaoke. I ended up being the one putting the songs in for everyone.

In the past year or so, I had regressed in terms of socialising with new people which caused all sorts of my havoc with my mental health (far too much time spent thinking depressing thoughts). This is partially why I had to do this exercise with the fruit - so I can stop thinking so much. If I asked weird questions when I'm with people for the next couple of weeks, that is me trying something new too. Just a warning. You'll all be part of my mental training exercises.

This is why I find going out with lots of different people really interesting. Although admittedly many of the people I have associated with in the past few years have been uni students, even within that set, there is great diversity. I think the more types of people I experience life with, the easier it is to interact with the world.

On another note, what with training and singing and not enough sleep, I came the closest to losing my voice as I have ever been. Or maybe I'm just getting sick. I hope not.

#3 Bats and Flying Foxes
Apparently, flying foxes/fruit bats are a type of bat.

About Flying-Foxes
[Incidentally, on this same website you can purchase stickers of a pair of eyes to put on the back of bike helmets to deter swooping birds. Practical, but amusing.]

When I got back last night, I looked up and saw one flying overhead about 5-10 metres away. The outline of their wings are pretty distinct. It was pretty big too, which makes me suspect that it was a grey-headed flying fox (also to be found in the Royal Botanic Gardens aka 'the bat bit').

There seems to be a lot of activity in the trees behind my house, which one doesn't notice normally (I live on a fairly busy road, so you can't really hear anything during the day).

Well, that's one mystery solved.

#4 University Assignments, Exams, etc.
I'm in the process of writing up an essay, so I don't think I'll have much to write about for the next couple of days (unless I dip into that unfortunate habit of procrastination). It'll be a relief when the year is over and I can finally start being excited about my upcoming travel plans.

In regards to Kendo, there is nothing stopping you from self practice when you are away. You can even practice without a shinai. Footwork around where-ever you go, practice kihon movements and pushing with your left leg, and practice your cuts with empty hands and relaxed wrists so that your hands will 'bounce' at the end of the cut like a shinai should.

Why do you have depressing thoughts? You seemed pretty normal to me last time we talked.... XD If you aren't able to meet new people, then just socialise with people you already know =D Kendo people are always up for social activities by the looks of it ^_^

Yeah, I was thinking that about training while away. I already do it sometimes on the train when I'm bored or when I take a break from other things.

WRT depressing thoughts, I am fairly normal now, but I had a major spate of depression for a while and I wasn't seeing enough people at that point in time, which accounted for it probably. Bottom line was, get out more.
